Swedish construction and development company Skanska has signed a contract with Highline Public Schools to build a replacement high school in Burien, Washington.

The contract, valued at $113.5m (£93m), will be included in the US order bookings for the third quarter of 2019.

Under the terms of the contract, Skanska will demolish the high school, located on a 13-acre site, and build a new 22,000m² replacement school which will accommodate up to 1,500 students.

As part of the project, the Swedish company will construct general and speciality classrooms, a theatre and black box drama classroom, science classrooms, career and technical education spaces as well as gyms and tennis courts.

Improvements will include courtyards and recreational areas, bus loading and unloading areas, new student pick-up and drop-off areas, parking for staff, visitors and events, in addition to off-site improvements to adjacent city streets.

Construction has already commenced and the project is scheduled for completion in June 2021.

Earlier in August 2019, Skanska signed an agreement with the Swedish Transport Administration, Trafikverket, to construct double lanes for the freight railway Hamnbanan, the Eriksberg-Pölsebo stage, in Gothenburg.

The contract is worth SEK1.3bn (£110m), which will be included in the order bookings for Skanska Sweden for the third quarter of 2019.

The project involves an extension of 1,900m, of which 1,100m will be a tunnel, north of the existing single track.

Work includes the construction of temporary tracks for traffic diversion, demolition of a facility including a bridge, creation of new pedestrian and cycle paths, new football field, as well as a new clubhouse for Eriksbergs IF.

Construction is expected to commence in 2019 and the project will be completed in 2024.

Skanska is involved in building construction, civil infrastructure and developing commercial properties in select US markets. The company is also a major development and construction company in the Nordics, with operations in Sweden, Norway and Finland, and developing residential and commercial property projects in select home markets.
