Skanska to build new hospital pavilion in Arlington, Virginia

Swedish construction company Skanska has signed an agreement with Virginia Hospital Center to build a new outpatient pavilion and parking garage in Arlington in the US state of Virginia.

The contract is worth $37m and will be included in the company’s US order bookings for fourth quarter of this year, the company stated.

Occupying a total area of about 21,000m², the six-storey outpatient pavilion will house physical therapy examination and treatment rooms, radiology and imaging suites, clinics for examinations and six operating rooms.

The parking garage will include three levels below grade and six levels above grade, with a total holding capacity of 1,700 cars.

The building’s construction is expected to be completed by January of 2023.

Last month, Skanska, as part of a joint venture with ECCO III, had signed a contract with the New York State Department of Transportation to improve commercial vehicle access to and from the Hunts Point Peninsula in the Bronx, New York City.

Skanska’s share of the contract is worth $290m.

As per Skanska, the project will improve several roadways, enhancing access to nearly 78,000 vehicles that travel to and from the Hunts Point Peninsula each day.

The Swedish company will also build a new shared-use path for both pedestrians and bicyclists, replacing a pedestrian bridge.Together with the new access routes for commercial vehicles, the new bridge will improve safety of local motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Construction is ongoing and is expected to be completed in 2023.

In November, the company had also been selected by University of North Carolina Hospitals to build a new surgical tower in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The contract is worth $207m.

The 31,100m², seven-storey tower will include advanced surgical spaces, including 24 operating rooms, 56 pre and post-operating rooms, and 56 intensive care unit rooms for recovering patients, families and guests.

The new tower will tie into the existing facility on several levels, while improving the main patient entry and current hospital logistics with two new pedestrian bridges.
