Gateshead Council and its development partner Ask:Patrizia have awarded a contract to Sir Robert McAlpine for the construction of a £260m ($334m) waterfront conference and events destination in Gateshead, UK.

To be located on the NewcastleGateshead Quayside, the development will feature an arena with a capacity of 12,500 and 6,300m² of conference and exhibition space.

The project will also include an additional 2,800m² of space, where two hotels, bars, restaurants, car parking and extensive areas of the public realm, will be located.

The arena will able to hold major music and cultural events along with hosting international conference and exhibitions.

The region itself is expected to have up to 300,000 new visitors each year, boosting the economy up to £30m ($38.5m) annually.

The 10-acre site will be located opposite to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and between Sage Gateshead and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. The new destination is expected to have easy access to the Quays, Gateshead Town Centre and the wider region.

The new complex is expected to open in 2023 and a full planning application will be submitted early next year.

Gateshead Council CEO Sheena Ramsey said: “The appointment of Sir Robert McAlpine brings us a huge step closer to delivering this world class events destination for the region and we're glad to have them on board. This development will act as a catalyst for renewed economic growth, maximising local employment, training and supply chain opportunities.

“This is about being ambitious for Gateshead, we need everyone in the borough to be able to fulfil their true potential and projects like this create the conditions for them to thrive.”

Sir Robert McAlpine Scotland and Northern Region managing director Mark Gibson said: “We're excited to be working on this world class conference and events development on the River Tyne, in a region with a global reputation for its cultural and leisure offer.

“We bring a wealth of experience and have a highly-skilled, senior team to deliver this fantastic project using the local workforce and subcontractors wherever possible. We are looking forward to making a start as soon as the planning process is completed.”
