Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center has broken ground on a $59m (£49m) cancer centre on the Scripps Mercy Hospital campus in San Diego, US.

The outpatient facility, to be called Prebys Cancer Center, will offer a range of cancer treatment and support services.

The 40,000ft², four-storey cancer centre is named after the late Conrad Prebys, who in 2016 pledged a $20m gift toward the facility and a $5m gift for an endowed medical director position at Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center.

The new cancer centre, which will be part of the Scripps MD Anderson partnership, will be located on Fifth Avenue on the main hospital campus in Hillcrest.

The facility is the first new construction in Scripps Mercy’s master redevelopment plan and is expected to open in 2022.

Patients will have access to the latest radiation therapy technology, including two TrueBeam linear accelerators, which provide external beam radiation treatments.

The facility will also house a 20-chair infusion centre, where chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and other treatments will be provided.

The centre will include spaces for treatment planning conferences, patient exams and consultations, physician offices and patient support services.

A new 140-space parking garage, which will be constructed adjacent to the facility, is expected to open in 2022.

Prebys Cancer Center will be the second of two regional cancer hubs under the Scripps MD Anderson partnership in San Diego County.

The first hub, located on the Torrey Pines Mesa, was opened as a radiation oncology centre in 2012, and the build-out of the cancer hub with additional patient service space is expected to be completed in 2020.

Scripps MD Anderson also offers patient care at Scripps Green Hospital, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, and at its clinics and other outpatient locations.

Prebys Cancer Center has been designed to help comfort and support patients, families and friends. It features floor-to-ceiling windows, artwork inspired by nature, and a ‘tree of hope’ in the main lobby to symbolise strength and healing.

Three rooftop terraces will surround the infusion centre on the second floor.

Kitchell is the general contractor and Mascari Warner Dinh Architects is the architect for the new facility.

The cancer centre will be funded through philanthropy, borrowing and operating income.
