A joint venture (JV) of Salini Impregilo and NRW has been chosen as the preferred respondent to design, build and maintain the $2bn Forrestfield-Airport Link in Perth, Australia.

The JV won the contract after outbidding two other JV groups, which include Forrestfield Connect (ACCIONA Infrastructure, BAM International and Ferrovial Agroman), and JHL (John Holland and Leighton Contractors).

The Public Transport Authority of Western Australia is now expected to hold talks with the selected JV to finalise the contract by May 2016.

The new rail link will connect with the existing Midland Line near Bayswater, running underground to Forrestfield.

The project is expected to open in 2020, with forward works for service relocations progressing since December 2015.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said: "We envisage the contractor will mobilise on site in the coming months. This is an incredibly exciting time for a project that will change the way the people of Perth, and in particular Perth's eastern foothills, travel to our city.”
