French company EDF Renewables has awarded a contract to Saipem for the construction of the £1.8bn ($1.5bn) Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) wind farm offshore Scotland.

Planned to be built in the North Sea approximately 15km off the coast of Fife in south-east Scotland, the 450MW NnG wind farm will feature 54 turbines, each with 8MW capacity.

Under the contract, Saipem will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of 54 steel foundation jackets for an equivalent number of wind turbines, and two foundation jackets for the offshore electrical substations.

The firm will also undertake the transportation and installation of the relevant topsides for the project.

Saipem plans to partly manufacture the jackets at its own yard and partly in fabrication facilities located in Scotland.

Saipem E&C Offshore Division chief operating officer Francesco Racheli said: “Our collaboration with EDF Renewables and with the entire supply chain will allow us to contribute to the generation of 450 megawatts of green energy, fostering the utilisation of local supply chain and expertise to provide the most competitive solution to our stakeholders and clients and execute a successful project.”

Being developed by a 50-50 joint venture between EDF and Irish electricity company ESB, the NnG offshore wind project will have a capacity to generate clean electricity required to power over 375,000 households annually.

Additionally, Saipem has secured a new contract for the 376MW Formosa 2 wind farm project, offshore Miaoli County on the West coast of Taiwan.

The project is being developed off the coast of Taiwan by a joint venture between Macquarie Capital and Swancor Renewable Energy, a subsidiary of Swancor.

Under the contract, Saipem will be responsible for the supply of material and fabrication of 32 foundation jackets for an equivalent number of wind turbine generators. Construction on the project is scheduled to commence in early 2020.
The two contracts awarded to Saipem have a combined value of €750m ($825.5m).
