A consortium of PORR and PORR Bau has signed a contract with the General Directorate for National Roads and Highways (GDNRH) of Poland for the construction of bypass for Nowe Miasto Lubawskie in Voivodeship Ermland-Masuren.

Representatives of GDNRH and PORR signed the contract in February 2018 and construction of the bypass will begin in 2018. The duration of the contract is 34 months.

The contract, which forms part of the works for national road Nr. 15, is valued at nearly €62.5m (PLN259m).

The project will be executed on a design-build basis and is set for completion in 2020.

With the signing of the contract, PORR will now produce the design documentation, get the requisite permits and approvals, and carry out the construction works.

PORR has received the mandate from GDNRH as the only company to meet all the conditions of the call for tender in full.

The national road Nr. 15 between Ostroda and Torun passes through the centre of Nowe Miasto Lubawskie.

During rush hour, traffic jams on this highway can hold up vehicles for many kilometres.

The new stretch will be around 18km long. Access roads and engineering structures such as eight overpasses will also be built, including a 450m-long elevated road, a bridge with a length of 300m and four underpasses for wild animals.

The construction site is located in the wetlands of the River Drwęca and hence it requires the use of construction methods with latest technology.

Furthermore, the area is a designated ‘Natura 2000’ reserve, which means that highly restrictive environmental regulations will apply for the contractor.

PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: “We have started the new year with a prestigious tender for a critical infrastructure project.

“The bypass will make a significant improvement to traffic conditions on the transit stretch as well as in the town itself.”
