PointOne breaks ground on new $80m data facility in Virginia Beach

PointOne Development, a developer of hyper-scale data centre campuses, has broken ground on multi-purpose cable landing station and edge computing data centre in Virginia Beach in the US.

The $80m project, which consists two phases, involves construction of two 31,000ft² data centre spaces that will serve growing edge computing sector within cloud, government, and enterprise verticals in Virginia.

Virginia Economic Development Partnership president and CEO Stephen Moret said: “PointOne’s second Virginia investment demonstrates our state’s reputation as a global and sophisticated technology hub.

“This facility will enhance Virginia’s competitive edge in technology and have a positive economic impact on the Virginia Beach region.”

The two facilities will comprise computing data centres, a cable landing station for future subsea cables and an international internet business exchange.

PointOne chief revenue officer Tim Shaheen said: “We appreciate the support from the State of Virginia and other state and local organizations for this project.

“We are committed to investing for the long-term to support Virginia’s growth as a key cloud computing hub in the United States.”

PointOne plans to complete construction on the project in early 2020. General contracting firm S.B. Ballard Construction Company has been selected as the design-builder for the facility.

PointOne said in statement: "Consistent with PointOne’s commitment to energy efficiency, the centre will utilize power generation equipment to participate in load curtailment programs, which will increase the facility’s resiliency to the electrical utility grid."

In January 2019, PointOne said it is assessing additional properties  for  data  centres  in  the  US,  as  well  as  in Australia, Canada, Ireland, and the UAE.

The firm is currently undertake Remington  Technology  Park,  situated  on  234  acres  between  Ashburn  and  Virginia  Beach  with access  to  300MW of  power. It is planned to be completed in early 2020.

PointOne said that its investments were driven by the increasing cloud storage demand in Northern Virginia.
