Chinese mobile phone manufacturer Oppo has broken ground on a new research and development (R&D) centre in Chang'an Town, China to accelerate global innovation strategy.

Designed by architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates in partnership with professional consultants, the Chang'an R&D centre will cover an area of approximately 82,000m².

It will feature 10 all-glass towers, including offices, a talent development centre, an R&D centre, a mobile internet research centre, and a testing centre.

Along with the company's existing R&D centres, the new facilities are expected to power the firm’s continued innovation for intelligent connectivity. The new research centre will serve as global R&D engine for the company.
To boost its R&D capabilities, the company is also planning to spend $1.46bn (£1.17bn) on R&D in 2019.

Oppo said that its new Chang'an R&D centre is one of major initiatives of Dongguan to boost the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Expected to house 5,000 R&D personnel, the Oppo's new Chang'an R&D centre will be responsible for the R&D, design and testing of a range of smart devices, including smartphones, and IoT products.

Oppo MEA president Andy Shi said: "We are very pleased to officially break ground on OPPO's new Chang'an R&D center. It will play a strategic role in OPPO's R&D endeavors, further enhancing the core technological capabilities of the company and accelerating the implementation of our R&D strategy and objectives.

"The project will be built to the highest industrial standards and we will spare no effort in making the new R&D center a masterpiece initiative in the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Corridor, helping to bolster the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.”

The company said that the R&D will support its mission of providing enhanced smart devices and services for the era of intelligent connectivity.

In February 2019, Oppo started construction of an intelligent manufacturing hub in Dongguan Chang'an New District.
The new hub is intended for the production and quality control of smart devices and peripheral products.
