The Port Authority of New York (NY) and New Jersey (NY) have issued a Request for Qualification to solicit input for the design and operation of a new Central Hall linking the new Terminals B and C at LaGuardia Airport.

The Central Hall, which will feature 50-foot-high ceiling, glass walls, will serve as main entrance and focal point of the new $8bn (£6.6bn) LaGuardia Airport.

New York Governor Cuomo said: "New York is leading the way on infrastructure investments, and the new LaGuardia Airport is just another example of our state's efforts to create a modern transportation network.

"The Central Hall at LaGuardia will serve as an iconic gateway to welcome the millions of visitors that go through the airport every year and further our progress in rebuilding our airports for the future."

The Central Hall will comprise approximately 62,500ft² of premium interior space and feature premium dining, retail, meeting space and other amenities.

Additional features of the Central Hall include a unique art, architectural or interactive installation.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey executive director Rick Cotton said: "Like Governor Cuomo's vision to transform LaGuardia into a state of the art airport, the design for LGA's new Central Hall must be ambitious and unifying.

"The new Central Hall is not only the face of LaGuardia, but the face of New York for the 30 million passengers traveling through the airport each year; this RFQ will help identify the firms with the brightest and boldest ideas for the project.”

The Port Authority seeking a public-private partnership to provide interior design for unique dining, retail, art and programming for the project.

Last year, Cuomo has signed a legislation to begin the process for building a new AirTrain connection to LaGuardia Airport.

The AirTrain LGA project is proposed to be established between the airport and the Long Island Rail Road Station and the 7 subway train at Mets-Willets Point in Flushing, Queens.
