NRC Group, YIT win €220m contract to build Jokeri Light Rail line in Finland

A joint venture of NRC Group Finland and Finnish construction company YIT has been awarded a contract worth €220m to build the Jokeri Light Rail line in Finland.

The €386m Jokeri Light Rail is a fast light railway connection planned to be built between the Itäkeskus district in the eastern part of Helsinki to the Keilaniemi district in the south-eastern region of Espoo.

The light rail line, which will be owned by City of Helsinki and the City of Espoo, will also pass through a number of stations such as Keilaniemi, Otaniemi, Leppävaara, Huopalahti, Oulunkylä, Viikki Science Park and Itäkeskus.

The joint venue plans to make formal contractual signing of the alliance contract in May following which work is planned to commence in June 2019. The project is due for completion in June 2024.

YIT Finland senior vice-president Jarkko Salmenoja said: “The alliance parties possess outstanding competence in demanding rail projects similar to this one. It is great to be constructing increasingly functional and ecologically sustainable rail connections in the metropolitan region."

The project is planned to be executed under an alliance model, with the client organization formed by the cities combined together with that of the contractors and the consulting companies Ramboll Finland, Sitowise and NRC Group Finland.

City of Espoo Public Works director Harri Tanska said: “Jokeri Light Rail is a profitable project for the cities, especially in view of the land-use benefits that the new rail connection offers.

"The light railway will make the areas more attractive for residential and commercial purposes, as well as enable denser urban construction along sustainable transport connections.

"Jokeri Light Rail satisfies the strategic objectives of Helsinki and Espoo regarding networked rail transport and carbon neutrality. It also offers a solution to the acute capacity issues of trunk line 550."

The Jokeri Light Rail, which will replace trunk bus line 550, is expected to make cross-city public transport more reliable.
