Nestlé Purina PetCare has announced its plans to construct a $550m new factory in Ohio, the US, to meet the growing demand for nutritious pet foods.

To be built at Williamsburg Township's South Afton Industrial Park, the new 1.2 million ft2 facility is expected to employ over 300 people by 2024. Most of the jobs will include professional staff, production operators, technical staff and engineers.

The company plans to commence construction work of the new factory in this fall, and the facility is expected to be operational in 2023.

Once operational, the new factory will produce dry dog and cat food brands that include Purina Pro Plan, Purina ONE and Dog Chow.

Purina said that the design of its facility will be inspired by Nestlé facilities across the world and will be constructed as per its quality and food safety standards.

It will make use of robotics and innovative digital tools. The facility will also feature a training centre to promote learning and development.

The company is also planning to completely power its factory with power drawn from renewable sources to support its aim for zero environmental impact in company operations by 2030.

Nestlé Purina PetCare currently has 21 existing manufacturing locations across the US.

Purina president Nina Leigh Krueger said: “Purina is excited to be building two new factories in the U.S. over the next few years. This growth is a testament to strong consumer demand for our high-quality nutrition that helps pets live longer, healthier lives.

“Our new Ohio factory will build on our more than 90-year history of making science-based dog and cat foods that pet owners trust.

“We are grateful for the partnership at the state and local levels, and we're excited to call Clermont County home and support this great community for a long time.”
