Finnish oil refining and marketing company Neste has commenced construction on the expansion of the new production line for renewable and sustainable products at its refinery in Singapore.

The company, which invested €1.4bn (£1.3bn) in expanding its production capacity in Singapore, laid the foundation stone for the expansion. Construction began at the beginning of 2019.

Neste president and CEO Peter Vanacker said: “The Singapore expansion marks an important step in the execution of our growth strategy for renewables globally and the beginning for the world’s most unique and advanced refinery for renewables.

“The new production line will be the best in class worldwide, thanks to our continuous process and technology development.”

The investment will provide Neste with more options to choose between product solutions in the production system.

Besides renewable diesel, the company’s refineries also manufacture renewable aviation fuel and raw materials for polymers and chemicals materials.

Neste said that the investment in Singapore would also be used to create additional logistics capabilities and increase raw material pretreatment for the use of low-quality waste and residue raw materials for the existing refinery.

Vanacker said: “We are determined to serve our customers and the industry in reducing carbon emissions. With the Singapore expansion, we will have the capacity to produce over one million tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel annually.”

The expansion in Singapore will extend the company’s renewable product capacity in the Asian country by up to 1.3mtpa, bringing the total capacity to 4.5m tonnes annually in 2022.

The new production line in Singapore is expected to commence operations in the first half of 2022.

Singapore Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for Social Policies Tharman Shanmugaratnam said: “Neste is not only the world’s most sustainable energy company and a leader in renewable products but also one of the world’s most sustainable corporations across all industries.

“Besides collaborating in innovation, one of the ways we are developing these win-win partnerships is by developing a trusted, digitised and resilient supply chain network. This is critical for refinery operations.

“We are also developing new capabilities in managing and greening our supply chains, to meet the demands of firms like Neste.”
