Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS), a non-profit healthcare system in Central New York, US, has broken ground on a new $480m regional medical centre in Downtown Utica, New York.

The new 373-bed medical centre campus will comprise a central utility plant and parking garage on 25 acres land.

Additional, the nine-storey, 672,000ft² medical centre will be equipped to offer medical advancements for patients.

MVHS president/CEO Darlene Stromstad said: “This medical center will not only transform the way we deliver healthcare to this community, but it will help continue the redevelopment and resurgence of Downtown Utica.

“This new facility will give our wonderful employees the space and technology needed to provide the state-of-the-art care that is needed in our region.”

The centre’s first floor will comprise emergency services, trauma services, radiology and clinical laboratory services while the second floor features Surgical Innovation Center among others.

Other features of the new centre include critical and intensive care, maternity and special care nursery, intermediate care, medical/surgical services, medical/surgical services, paediatrics and medical/surgical services, and behavioural health.

Oneida County executive Anthony Picente Jr. said: “Mohawk Valley Health System’s new state-of-the-art medical campus will provide our region with all of the elements necessary to ensure our health needs are well taken care of.”

MVHS said that the facility will provide access from the highway to the hospital front door and parking garage as well as ED entrance and parking lot.

City of Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri said: "Beyond healthcare, however, the campus will also have far-reaching impacts for the overall development of our community, attracting young professionals and elevating research and innovation - all of which are important ingredients as we look to grow our local economy.”

Hammes Company is serving as the project management company for the new medical centre while Gilbane Building Company is the construction manager. NBBJ is serving as the architectural firm designing the facility.

Engineering consulting firm CHA Consulting is currently evaluating the potential repurposing of the existing hospital buildings, including all three campuses Faxton, St. Luke’s and St. Elizabeth.
