Motherson Sumi Systems (MSSL), an Indian company that manufactures automotive wiring harnesses, has broken ground on a production facility at Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone (RAKEZ) Al Hamra Industrial Zone in the UAE.

MSSL will manufacture a range of products, including wiring harnesses, rearview mirrors for passenger cars, and injection moulded products, at its manufacturing unit in RAKEZ.

Motherson Sumi Systems acquired more than 21,000m² of land at RAKEZ Al Hamra Industrial Zone for the factory and construction has already commenced.

MSSL chairman Vivek Chaand Sehgal said: “We are very glad to have taken this important step of setting up our manufacturing facility in the fast-growing emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. This provides us great opportunities for larger exposure to the global markets.

“We are truly proud to be working in conjunction with RAKEZ, which is among the leading economic zones in the region.”

Operations at the new facility are expected to commence in the second quarter of 2020.

RAKEZ group CEO Ramy Jallad said: “We consider the coming of Motherson to our thriving industrial ecosystem as another significant milestone in our commitment to underpinning the industrial growth in the emirate.

“This very industry is among the leading contributors to the emirate’s stability and strength in tackling economic headwinds. I’m sure that Motherson is one of the great additions we are going to have this year.”

MSSL, established as a joint venture with Sumitomo Wiring Systems in 1986, manufactures specialised automotive components for OEMs.

The company has a presence in 41 countries and is the flagship company of automotive supplier Samvardhana Motherson Group (SMG).

RAKEZ is a business and industrial hub established by the Government of Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE. It hosts more than 14,500 companies from over 100 countries and operating in more than 50 industries.
