The MetroHealth System, a public health care system located in Ohio, US, has broken ground on new hospital at its campus in Cleveland, marking the next major step of the campus's $946m transformation plan.

Scheduled to be opened in 2023, the 11-storey, 270-room hospital is being built on MetroHealth System's main campus on West 25th Street in Cleveland, US.

Over the nine-year time period from 2016 to 2023, the campus transformation plan is expected to support more than 5,000 jobs.

Upon completion, the new hospital will feature private rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and space for family members. It aims to reflect the outdoors and natural landscape of Cleveland, with earth tones, indoor vegetation and natural lighting.

Additionally, the hospital will include a large main lobby with an open community area intended for local performances and community gatherings.

The transformation plan aims to redesign the campus of Cuyahoga County’s public health system MetroHealth, in order to meet the ever-changing needs of patients and the programs that support community.

The plan also involves turning nearly half of MetroHealth's main campus into green space with connections to the Towpath trail and RTA bus lines.

The building has been designed to achieve high levels of environmental and wellness standards, including LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver and WELL building certification.

MetroHealth campus transformation senior vice-president Walter Jones said: “We’ve assembled a passionate and dedicated team that has been working together for the past year and a half to bring the project to this point.

"The collaborative environment has resulted in a project that MetroHealth and the community will be proud of."

As per the 2017 report from Cleveland State University’s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs, the transformation plan is expected to support more than 5,000 jobs and also result in $900m in total economic benefit for the Cuyahoga County.

Turner Construction Company leads the construction management, while HGA leads the design planning, architecture and engineering of the project. Hammes Company serves as the owner’s rep for the campus transformation.
