Medical West Hospital, an affiliate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Health System, has received Certificate of Need approval from the State Health Planning and Development Agency for its proposed construction of a replacement hospital in McCalla in Jefferson County.

The project involves the construction of a 200-bed replacement hospital near Exit 1 on Interstate Highway 459 in a bid to serve the residents of southwest Jefferson County.

The hospital officials are seeking new facility to continue providing the health care in a patient-focused environment.

The new hospital will provide all the services currently available at the existing facility, which was built in 1964.

Medical West Hospital CEO Keith Pennington said: “We are pleased by today’s action which will allow us to begin the next chapter in the history of Medical West, proudly serving the residents of Bessemer and southwest Jefferson County for more than 50 years.

“The new facility will help us establish a state-of-the art hospital for our patients.”

Additionally, Medical West will serve area residents through operation of its primary care clinics in Bessemer, Hueytown, Vance, Tannehill, Hoover and Parkwest as well as the freestanding emergency department on Highway 150.

Located on 9th Ave. Southwest in Bessemer, the currently facility will continue to provide full medical care during the construction of the new facility which is expected to take three years.

Last year, the UAB, along with BBVA Compass and Birmingham Legion FC, has commenced construction on the stadium expansion project.

The expanded BBVA Compass Field stadium will include a 4,000-seat grandstand, a permanent concessions stand, bathrooms and ticket office.

Commenting on the move, UAB director of athletics Mark Ingram earlier said: “These renovations are going to make our venue one of the best on-campus soccer stadiums in the country and we can’t thank BBVA Compass and Legion FC enough for helping support this project.

“This partnership gives us 20 additional opportunities to have the city of Birmingham and surrounding area on our campus to witness first-hand the transformations that are taking place within UAB Athletics and the university as a whole.”
