British construction firm McLaren, in partnership with marketing firm Pico, has been selected by official construction partner by the UK Department of International Trade as for the 3,417m² two-level UK Pavilion for the Expo 2020 Dubai event.

McLaren and Pico will be responsible for the construction of the UK Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, under the theme “Innovating for a Shared Future”.

Planned to be built in the expo’s ‘Opportunity’ district, the UK Pavilion was designed by UK artist and designer Es Devlin OBE and will be produced by Avantgarde, a global brand experience agency.

Scheduled to be held from 20 October 2020 until 10 April 2021, the Expo 2020 Dubai is expected to attract 25 million visitors from across the world.

In addition to showcasing UK as a global hub of innovation and its expertise in the arts and the space sector, the UK Pavilion will enable worldwide across the globe to contribute a word to a collective global message on the front façade, which is generated by artificial intelligence and visitors’ contributions.

Meanwhile, UAE and the UK announced the ground breaking ceremony of the UK Pavilion, centrepiece of which is a 20m-high, cone-shaped structure made up of rows of protruding slats and extending outwards from one central point to form a circular facade.

Additional features of the building include cross-laminated timber on a concrete structure.

McLaren chairman Kevin Taylor said: “Being asked to build the UK Pavilion is testament to our ability to bring to life some exceptional buildings. We are proud to represent both the UK and Dubai with this exciting project.”

UK International Trade Secretary Dr Liam Fox said: “As the first major international moment after we leave the EU, Expo 2020 Dubai will mark the UK becoming a truly independent trading nation.

“The Expo provides a global platform to showcase our ambition for the future, and our participation provides excellent opportunities for UK businesses that have already won major contracts.”
