The joint venture between McConnell Dowell and Built Environs has secured the Early Contractor Engagement (ECI) contract for the Puhinui Station Interchange in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Puhinui Station Interchange is touted to be an important component in the Southwest Gateway, aimed at enhancing public transport connectivity between Auckland Airport and the CBD. It is also expected to strengthen the wider bus and rail connections, enabling for more sustainable transport modes.

With the latest contract, McConnell Dowell and Built Environs have entered into the design phase, before the construction begins later this year.

McConnell Dowell New Zealand and Pacific managing director Fraser Wyllie said: “Together, McConnell Dowell and Built Environs have a strong track record of delivering rail projects such as the Western Program Alliance, Gold Coast Light Rail, City Rail Link Contract 2 and the North Melbourne Station Upgrade.”

The scope of work includes the demolition of the existing Puhinui Station footbridge, building a fit-out, at-grade bus area including shelter, kiss and ride parking, cycle shelter and landscaping, an elevated concourse with vertical transportation (stairs, lifts and escalators) along with HOP ticket gateline, staff and retail facilities.

Built Environs managing director Daryl Young said: “We are excited and look forward to working closely with Auckland Transport to deliver a safe, innovative and sustainable transport network for the region.”

Auckland Transport CEO Shane Ellison said: “It’s fantastic to have the McConnell Dowell – Built Environs Joint Venture involved early so we can focus on delivering the upgraded Puhinui Station Interchange.

“By early 2021 we’ll have a modern, new interchange at Puhinui, with direct, fast and frequent bus services running every 10 minutes along priority lanes.”

In April 2019, Built Environs was appointed as the managing contractor for the pre-construction services for the Modbury Hospital Upgrade Project in South Australia.

As the managing contractor, the company will collaborate with DPTI, SA Health and their project design team in the development and offer technical input to the design elements and will also provide enhancements to meet the budget and time constraints.
