A joint venture between Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures and Kajima Partnerships has been selected by the South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust (SWLSTG) as preferred bidder to construct two mental health hospitals in south west London.
Under the plans, SWLSTG will collaborate with the JV to deliver two new hospitals at its main Tooting hospital site in Wandsworth and the other at its Tolworth Hospital site in Surbiton.
At present, planning permission is available for up to 839 homes on the Springfield site, including up to 262 homes within two existing Grade II listed hospital buildings.
The developer believes that construction on the 270,000 sq ft hospital accommodation at Springfield is scheduled to commence in 2018 while project completion is slated in 2019.
South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust CEO David Bradley said: “We are pleased to have reached this important milestone. The Trust has been developing the plans for two new hospitals for many years and we are delighted, after a robust procurement process, to have selected STEP to work alongside us to develop the more detailed plans as we move forward to delivering the new hospitals our patients desperately need.
“Our staff work hard every day to deliver the best care but our buildings are old and expensive to run. It is very important to us that we provide patients with the best facilities and services possible and we are pleased to have found a way to do this through raising our own funds.
“The Estate Modernisation Programme will transform the way we deliver mental health care for generations to come and ensure our patients receive the best care in first class modern facilities.”
