Matrix Service bags contract to build $250m LNG facility in North Carolina

Matrix Service, a subsidiary of Matrix Service Company, has been awarded a contract by energy services firm Piedmont Natural Gas to construct $250m liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Robeson County, North Carolina, US.

The project is expected to allow Piedmont Natural Gas, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, to continue the supply of reliable natural gas during peak usage days to its customers.

The one billion-cubic-foot (Bcf) storage facility, which will cover approximately 60 acres of a 685-acre piece of Piedmont-owned property, is expected to create up to 150 jobs during construction phase and 10 to 12 permanent jobs once operational.

Piedmont Natural Gas expects the facility to serve roughly 100,000 homes on a cold day.

Duke Energy natural gas operations president Frank Yoho said: “Our highest priority is the safety of our natural gas infrastructure, our communities and our employees.

“The contractor we selected had to share our emphasis on safety, offer proven excellence in this specialized construction, and commit to minimize disruption to our neighbors in Robeson County."

Construction on the facility is scheduled to commence in May 2019, with completion planned in the summer of 2021.

The project, which is expected to provide more than $800,000 in tax revenue to the Robeson County annually, will be the fourth LNG facility to be owned and operated by Piedmont.

The firm's other three projects are located in Nashville, Tennessee; Bentonville, North Carolina, and Huntersville, North Carolina.

In April 2019, Piedmont Natural Gas said it filed request to the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) to raise its base rates to residential, commercial and industrial customers.

The move is a part of the firm's effort to recover costs related to system growth, pipeline integrity management, infrastructure investments, and safety and security upgrades.

Piedmont Natural Gas distributes natural gas to more than one million residential, commercial and industrial customers, as well as power plants, in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
