Mace to lead $1bn Keflavik International Airport expansion plan in Iceland

UK construction firm Mace has signed a long-term agreement with Iceland’s national airport and air navigation service provider Isavia to serve as programme manager for the £750m ($1bn) Keflavik International Airport Major Development Plan (MDP).

The MDP is a major component of Isavia’s plan to make the country’s largest airport as one of the major North Atlantic Hub for air traffic.

As per the terms of the agreement, Mace will be responsible for delivering the MDP in multiple phases, over a 10-year period. It will team up with Icelandic engineering firm Verkis to oversee and deliver the MDP.

Based on the Keflavik Airport Masterplan, the current MDP involves the construction of a new 85,000m², 17 airbridge-served aircraft gate East Pier, a new North Terminal and other associated works.

Mace will also provide consultancy services for projects at Keflavík Airport, including a linking building for the widening of the boarding corridor between the north and south building of the airport.

MDP will provide additional passenger processing and aircraft parking capacity as well as operational enhancements throughout related landside and airside areas.

Mace global aviation head Carl Dainter said: “Our appointment to the Keflavik MDP is a significant step towards achieving our stable and sustainable growth targets in the aviation sector.

“The scope, scale and complexity of the programme, combined with a clear alignment to Isavia’s values and ways of working, makes this an incredibly exciting commission for us.”

The MDP is expected to increase the airport’s capacity to more than 14.5 million passengers a year.

Isavia Keflavik Airport technical and infrastructure director Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson said: “Following an extensive and advanced procurement process we are certain that we have secured a great delivery partner for the upcoming development of Keflavik International Airport.

“After working on major airport related projects all over the world Mace brings experience and professionalism which is vital for successful delivery of complex airport projects.”
