Plastics, chemical and refining company LyondellBasell has announced plans to build a new $700M high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant at its manufacturing complex in La Porte, Texas.

The new plant will have an annual capacity of 500,000t.

LyondellBasell CEO and chairman of the management board Bob Patel said: "This project represents the next generation of technology.

"This location is ideal for this facility because of the feedstock advantage we enjoy, the ability to ship product around the world and, most importantly, the outstanding workforce that the Gulf Coast has to offer."

The project is anticipated to create up to 1,000 jobs during the construction peak and 75 full time positions.

Construction on the project is expected to commence in early 2017 and will be complete by 2019.
