L&T Construction wins major contract for residential project in India

L&T Construction, the construction unit of Indian technology, engineering, construction, manufacturing and financial services conglomerate L&T, has won a contract from the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) for the construction of 23,432 residential units with on-site infrastructure works at various locations in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.

The project, part of the Indian government’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), will be executed by the Buildings & Factories business of L&T Construction.

The project will involve the construction of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Low-Income Group (LIG) type of dwelling units and the building configurations range from 13 to 20 storeys.

The fast-track project is to be completed within stringent timelines.

Earlier in September 2019, the Transportation Infrastructure and Buildings & Factories businesses of L&T Construction secured an EPC project from the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIAPL) for the greenfield Navi Mumbai International Airport in Navi Mumbai.

Major development will include cut and fill works, terminal works such as departure and arrival forecourts, airfield development works which include a 3,700m south runway, apron systems, taxiway systems, airfield ground lighting and other facilities, as well as landside facilities such as roads, multi-level car parking, utilities and support facilities.

Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the Passenger Terminal Building will be capable of handling 10 million passengers per annum initially. The project will later be expanded to handle 20 million passengers per annum.

Currently, L&T Construction is executing the construction works of airports in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Delhi.

The company classifies its projects under four categories. Significant contracts are worth INR10bn (£113m) to INR25bn (£282m), large contracts are valued between INR25bn (£282m) and INR50bn (£564m), major contracts are worth INR50bn (£564m) to INR70bn (£791m), and contracts under mega classification are worth more than INR70bn (£791m).

L&T, with more than $21bn (£17bn) in revenue, has operations in more than 30 countries.
