British industrial gases and engineering company Linde has broken ground on a $1.4bn (£1.15bn) integrated manufacturing complex at its gasification facility on Jurong Island in Singapore.

The new complex will quadruple the company’s production capacity in Singapore to produce hydrogen and synthesis gas for ExxonMobil Asia Pacific’s multi-billion-dollar expansion of integrated manufacturing complex.

The company will use the strength and capabilities of its global engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) management expertise to ensure the success of the new complex.

Linde Engineering has developed the process concept and design, as well as the full EPC. Construction of the facility will be executed out of the company’s hubs in India, China and Germany.

Linde Engineering will also partner with regional and local process construction companies for the construction of the new complex.

The company will use advanced modularisation to optimise construction productivity and reduce the labour intensity on site, which will help improve site safety.

The largest super-module for the new complex, weighing around 3,500 tonnes, will be fabricated in India and shipped to Jurong Island.

Linde executive vice president and CEO for Asia Pacific Sanjiv Lamba said: “Today’s event represents an important step in our strategic partnership with ExxonMobil, and signals our continued commitment to Singapore.

“This expansion of our existing facilities on Jurong Island, at an investment of US$ 1.4 billion, is the single largest for our company globally and I am delighted that it will also add a number of high value manufacturing jobs in Singapore.

“Our integrated complex will be equipped with Linde’s world-class technologies which underpin our commitment to provide safe, reliable and sustainable solutions for our customers.”

Linde Gas Singapore will execute several projects, including modifications and interconnections to integrate the new complex and its existing facility, over the next four years to ensure continuity of gas supplies to its customers on Jurong Island during the construction of the complex.

ExxonMobil Asia Pacific chairman and managing director Gan Seow Kee said: “Today’s groundbreaking ceremony marks yet another important milestone in our long-term partnership with Linde.

“The new facility that Linde is building shows how a major ExxonMobil investment can further strengthen the Jurong Island ecosystem by attracting other new investments, and create high-value jobs in Singapore.”
