Lendlease Engineering, partner win £356m contract for Western Sydney Airport

Lendlease Engineering and its joint venture partner CPB Contractors have won a contract worth A$644m (£356m) to undertake major bulk earthworks package at the federally funded A$5.3bn (£3bn) Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.

The package of works includes delivery of design and construction of earthworks and drainage for the airport and topographical design for the airport precinct.

This is one of the largest bulk earthworks infrastructure projects to be awarded outside of the mining sector in Australia.

Over 35 heavy dump trucks and 60 scrapers will be deployed to move 75,000m³ of material per day to excavate and place 25m m³ of earth throughout the project.

Lendlease Building and Engineering CEO Dale Connor said: “Lendlease has a long history of participating in the development of Western Sydney and we look forward to delivering this next stage of the Western Sydney International project.

“As Western Sydney’s future aerotropolis, the work on Western Sydney International will be a major contributor to the economic and social development of the region.

“This project gives Lendlease the ability to provide further skills, training and employment opportunities across Western Sydney, with up to 500 people expected to work on this significant stage in the delivery of the airport.”

The federal government-owned Western Sydney Airport is developing the airport in stages in response to passenger demand. A single runway airport with a capacity for up to 10 million passengers a year will be constructed under Stage 1.

Lendlease and CPB Contractors are equal joint venture partners for the first package of works, which commenced in September 2018.

The bulk earthworks package will commence early in 2020 and is scheduled to be completed in 2022.

Lendlease Engineering NSW executive general manager Gavin Reymond said: “Our work in Western Sydney has allowed us to support more than 5,000 local residents in our skilling and employment training centres already operating in the region.

“Securing this package of works allows us to further embed our strong presence in Western Sydney and continue to support its growth.”

Previously, Lendlease Engineering secured several major contracts, including the Southern Program Alliance Additional Works Package in Victoria, along with the Wells Crossing to Glenugie Section of the Pacific Highway W2B Upgrade in New South Wales.
