Leighton Asia wins $103m Philippines tollway project

Leighton Asia, a Cimic Group company, has won a $103m (AUD140m) contract from NLEX Corporation for the construction of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Harbor Link Segment 10 – R10 Exit Ramp project in the Philippines.

The company said that advanced works have begun and the project is scheduled to be completed in late 2019.

Cimic Group CEO Michael Wright said: “Leighton Asia has been involved in the ongoing development of the NLEX infrastructure project since the first phase of construction in 1998.

“The award of this further work reflects our productive and enduring relationship with both Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) and its subsidiary, NLEX Corporation, and is a testament to the high-quality transport infrastructure solutions we provide.”

Under the contract, Leighton Asia will construct a 2.6km dual, elevated tollway to link the existing NLEX Segment 10 Road to the R10 Road and provide a continuation of the harbour link. It will also provide ramps, roadworks, electrical and mechanical works and landscaping.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has put the remaining right-of-way (ROW) for the 8.25km NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10 on the fast track to complete the section between Karuhatan, Valenzuela City, to C3 Road, Caloocan City, by the end of 2018.

The elevated expressway will provide direct access between the port area and the northern provinces of Luzon via NLEX, ease traffic congestion, especially along the western Metro Manila road corridor, and facilitate efficient delivery of goods to and from harbour area and Central and North Luzon.

The expressway will reduce travel time from the Manila Port to the NLEX to approximately 10 minutes.

NLEX and DPWH are working to complete the project by December 2020 ahead of the original schedule of May 2021.

Meanwhile, foundations of the elevated road at the site of the future NLEX Caloocan Interchange on C3 Road are in place for the construction of the C3-R10 section of the NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10.

Construction for the first section of the project, from C3 Road in Caloocan City to Espana in Manila, is scheduled in May 2019.
