Specialty chemicals manufacturer LANXESS is building a new multi-million euro plastics compounding facility at its Krefeld-Uerdingen site in Germany.

From the second half of 2019, the company will manufacture durethan and pocan engineering plastics, which are used in the automotive and electrical and electronics industries. The company will also build a warehouse and a silo facility.

Construction will begin in the fourth quarter of 2018 and 20 new jobs will be created at the Krefeld-Uerdingen site.

LANXESS board of management member Hubert Fink said: “The high-performance plastics business is a central pillar of our growth strategy. By expanding capacity, we are further strengthening our position as a provider of innovative product solutions for modern mobility.

“At the same time, we are making even better use of the potential of our integrated value chain for these products. The investment also shows that we are strongly committed to North Rhine-Westphalia as a business location.”

The company, which already operates a polymerisation and compounding plant for high-performance plastics in Krefeld-Uerdingen, added a new line for the production of specialty compounds into operation in March 2018.

LANXESS head of high-performance materials business unit Michael Zobel said: “Krefeld-Uerdingen is our central production platform for high-performance plastics, especially for the European markets. The expansion will enable us to better serve the continuing high demand from this market region in the future.”

The new plant in Krefeld-Uerdingen will be designed for future expansion of its operations in line with demand.

In recent years, LANXESS has expanded its compounding capacities to process most of the intermediates it produces into high-performance plastics in its global plant network.

The company is also building a new compounding plant in Changzhou, China, which is scheduled to commence operations in the second quarter of 2019.

The high performance materials business unit has operations in Dormagen (research and development), Krefeld-Uerdingen (PA 6 polymerisation, compounding), Hamm-Uentrop (PBT polymerisation, compounding), Brilon (Tepex production and development), all in Germany; Antwerp, Belgium (PA 6 polymerisation); Wuxi, China (compounding); Jhagadia, India (compounding); Gastonia, US (compounding); and Porto Feliz, Brazil (compounding).
