Construction and infrastructure services provider Kier has broken ground on the new main block of a 950-pupil school at Uplands Community College in Wadhurst, England.

Work to build the new main block of the school began this August and the facility is expected to be opened in September 2020. Upon completion, the project will provide about 3,843m² of teaching space across a range of traditional classrooms and learning areas along with specialist areas for art and technology.

Kier Regional Building Southern managing director Jonathan Payne said: “Working collaboratively with the Department for Education, East Sussex County Council and the school, we are proud to mark the start of work on this state-of-the-art facility that has been designed to provide an environment that will allow pupils to build their futures whilst reminding them of the past.

“We look forward to providing the local community with a first-class facility that will benefit generations to come.”

After the main school building’s construction is completed, a second stage of the project will start, where the old 1950’s building will be demolished and will be replaced with a new multi-use games area. The games area will include two new basketball courts and a 5-a-side football pitch.

Uplands Community College principal Mountford said: “We are very excited by the prospect of the new building. Our current buildings, which date from the 1950s, are not suitable for a modern secondary school and our students will greatly benefit from the new facilities. Our drama provision will be improved, as will computing, design and technology and maths.

“The students have been speechless as they have looked at the plans and realised what an amazing new building and multi-games area we will have.”

Earlier this month, Kier started work on the refurbishment of the science facilities at St Joan of Arc Catholic School in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.

The refurbished science teaching block is expected to be completed next year and will include 10 new teaching labs, two preparation rooms along with mini goods in lift for safely transporting chemicals.

Furthermore, the building will also have external cladding, roof, roofing windows and doors installed. The main school hall will also benefit from improvements as part of these works.
