John Sisk bags £78m contract for new M6 junction at Walsall, UK

International construction company John Sisk & Son has won a contract, worth £78m, from a joint venture of Highways England and Walsall Council to upgrade Junction 10 of the M6 motorway in Walsall, UK.

Under the terms of the contract, John Sisk will replace the bridges over the motorway to make the junction larger, and significantly reduce delays for road users.

The work will result in increased capacity at the traffic bottleneck in addition to improving safety.

With preparation work scheduled to commence in the autumn, construction on the project will begin in January 2020. Work is scheduled to be completed by summer 2022.

The Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership is supporting the project.

In addition to helping in facilitating growth at the Black Country Enterprise Zone in Darlaston, the new junction will improve accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians.

Highways England project manager David Reed said: “We are delighted to announce that John Sisk & Son have been appointed to lead this important scheme which will tackle congestion at a very busy junction at the heart of the country.

“This is a significant milestone for the project which will ultimately bring smoother and safer journeys for the many thousands of drivers using Junction 10 every day.”

The Secretary of State, following a public inquiry in April 2019, confirmed the orders to acquire the land required to alter the junction and layout of the local roads and motorway slip roads.

Walsall Council deputy leader Adrian Andrew said: “With Junction 10 on our doorstep, Walsall has excellent connectivity and is an attractive place for investment. Reducing delays and increasing capacity at this vital interchange will play an important role in strengthening our economy and improving the accessibility of our town centre.”

John Sisk UK civils managing director Paul Brown said: “The project provides us with an opportunity to further enhance our reputation and continue our excellent relationship with Highways England, following the recent successful completion of the A19 works in the North East.”
