John Holland, Mirvac to build Waterloo metro station in Sydney

The Government of New South Wales (NSW) has awarded a contract worth A$299m ($206m) to a joint venture (JV) of John Holland and Mirvac for the construction of new Waterloo metro station and an integrated station development.

Under the contract, John Holland will be responsible for the delivery of Waterloo metro station while Mirvac will be responsible for the integrated station development component delivery.

The Waterloo Metro Quarter project includes the construction of five building envelopes along with three towers and two mid-rise buildings above and adjacent to the station.

Mirvac said that the plan which includes residential, office and retail space, at least five per cent of houses will be affordable homes and 70 apartments will be reserved for social housing.

It also includes new community facilities, more trees planted and two new public plazas at Cope Street and Raglan Street.

Slated to be completed around the time Sydney Metro City & Southwest opens in 2024, the project is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs.

The JV will work closely with local community groups to create a placemaking strategy which will support local community involvement and investment in the future outcomes of the development.

Mirvac CEO and managing director Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz said: “Waterloo is a ‘once in a generation’ opportunity to drive genuine social renewal, driven by the Government’s vision to create a world-class, integrated station development which supports economic development and genuine placemaking outcomes for the broader precinct.”

John Holland and Mirvac will invest up to $20m in work with Aboriginal-owned enterprises, and is expected to double the Government’s Aboriginal workforce participation target to five per cent.

Mirvac said that it will seek a capital partner for a 50/50 end ownership of the office and retail components, while it will serve as the property manager for the office and retail components.
