Jacobs Engineering Group has received an EPCM contract from Pfizer for a new gene therapy manufacturing facility at the latter’s manufacturing site in Sanford, North Carolina.

Under the terms of the contract, Jacobs will design, build and qualify the multi-product facility, which will manufacture gene therapy products.

Jacobs also will provide design, expediting and commissioning services for the project.

Jacobs Life Sciences’ consumer goods and manufacturing senior vice president and general manager Ken Gilmartin said: “As a leader in gene therapy EPCM projects, Jacobs delivers end-to-end solutions in support of gene therapy research and advancement.

“Working on this project, we envision a day in the future when these potentially transformative gene therapies become available to treat medical conditions to help people enjoy healthier lives.”

Jacobs has also won a contract from Borealis to complete a front-end engineering design (FEED) study for a propane dehydrogenation (PDH) plant at the Borealis production site in Kallo, Belgium.

The new PDH plant will have a targeted annual production capacity of 740 kilotonnes, making it one of the largest facilities in the world.

As part of the FEED study, Jacobs is preparing the basic design package for the inside battery limit areas and the outside battery limit areas of the new PDH plant.

The FEED phase is scheduled for completion by mid-2018.

Jacobs petroleum and chemicals president Vinayak Pai said: “A new and innovative PDH plant of this scale would be a significant investment in the chemical industry in Europe and a response to market demand for polypropylene and propylene.

“We look forward to continuing our relationships with Borealis through the next development phase of this world-scale petrochemical plant.”

Borealis Base Chemicals executive vice-president Markku Korvenranta said: “We have selected a trusted partner in Jacobs Engineering for the FEED phase of this important project, which will allow us to further strengthen our position as a leading and innovative polypropylene and propylene supplier in Europe.”
