InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has broken ground on its new Holiday Inn Express hotel in downtown Washington, DC.

The 247-room hotel will be owned by developer Habte Sequar with Lima Hotels. Urgo Hotels & Resorts and will manage the hotel, which is scheduled to open in the last quarter of next year.

IHG Americas chief development officer Joel Eisemann said: “We are pleased to further establish the Holiday Inn Express brand presence in a premiere urban market such as Washington, D.C., and to serve the visitors of this historic city.

“We are also very pleased to be working with Habte Sequar, who has two decades of experience and a successful track record of developing multi-family properties throughout the area.”

Lima Hotels Principal Habte Sequar said: “We are extremely excited and proud to be associated with this strong brand. We are looking forward to a successful and long-lasting relationship with IHG.”

Located at 317 K Street NW, the 14-storey hotel will be a few blocks from the Mount Vernon Triangle Metro station, and the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

The property, located within the Mount Vernon Triangle neighbourhood, includes 17 blocks of mixed-use development such as restaurants, shops, high-rise condominiums, apartments and 1.8 million ft² of office space.

The new hotel will feature a business centre, a fitness centre, onsite parking, 1,500ft² of meeting space and IHG’s signature complimentary hot breakfast bar.

Guest rooms will include IHG’s latest Formula Blue design solution with a combination of fresh, energetic and engaging elements, enhancing the Holiday Inn Express brand experience.

Formula Blue design will feature upbeat, dynamic public space, with varying sightlines to ensure that amenities are easily identifiable and accessible. It will also provide the right mix of flexible areas and furnishings to accommodate a wide range of needs and functions.

IHG claims that its Formula Blue design is now being used in more than 1,400 Holiday Inn Express hotels that are both open and under development in the US.
