British property development and investment company Hammerson has unveiled plans for the regeneration of a 1,670m² site in Leeds City Centre, adjacent to its flagship destination, Victoria Gate.

Under the plans, the site, which is serving as a temporary surface car park, will be redeveloped to provide a 14-storey hotel for business and leisure guests.

The Victoria Gate Hotel is among the first schemes brought forward by Hammerson as part of its City Quarters concept to create mixed-use neighbourhoods surrounding the company’s existing destinations across the UK.

The concept involves the transformation of many of the company’s city venues beyond retail into successful neighbourhoods providing homes, workspace, hotel space and public realm.

Hammerson had recently submitted mixed-use masterplan applications for Martineau Galleries in Birmingham and the Goodsyard in Shoreditch.

The building will be located adjacent to Victoria Gate in Leeds City Centre and the land between the existing Victoria Gate multi-storey car park and St Peter’s Street (A61) will be redeveloped.

Acme, which delivered Victoria Gate, has designed the façade taking inspiration from the surrounding architecture and the city’s merchandising and textile history.

The hotel will comprise 205 rooms, an on-site gym, conferencing facilities, and a bar and restaurant on the ground floor.

The project is expected to support up to 980 construction jobs over the life of the project and the hotel will support 50 full-time jobs on site upon completion.

The company, which owns and manages Victoria Leeds, developed Victoria Gate in 2016. It also owns a 10-acre site near Victoria Leeds, which will be developed in due course to create a new mixed-use City Quarters neighbourhood.

Hammerson UK director of development and project management Robin Dobson said: “We are pleased to be able to share plans for a new hotel within the Victoria Estate as we continue the roll out of our City Quarters concept in thriving locations around the UK and Ireland.

“Hammerson has a strong track record of delivery in Leeds City Centre and these plans for a new, contemporary hotel represent the next step in our wider regeneration plans, creating a mixed-use destination where people can live, work and relax, centered around our premium flagship destination, Victoria Leeds.”
