British property development and investment company Hammerson has submitted plans for the construction of a 205-bed hotel adjacent to Victoria Gate in Leeds, UK.

The site, which is serving as a temporary surface car park, will be redeveloped into a flagship hotel for retail and leisure.

Construction of the new Victoria Gate Hotel is part of schemes brought forward by Hammerson as part of its City Quarters concept to create mixed-use neighbourhoods surrounding the company’s existing destinations across the UK.

Hammerson said that the concept will transform many of its city venues beyond retail into successful neighbourhoods providing homes, workspace, hotel space and public realm.

ACME, the architect that planned and delivered Victoria Gate, has designed the new iconic building.

The announcement of the new hotel follows the recent submission of mixed-use plan applications for Martineau Galleries in Birmingham and the Goodsyard in Shoreditch.

The new hotel will include 205 rooms, on-site gym and conference rooms. A new bar and restaurant on the ground floor will welcome guests and visitors to the city.

Upon completion, the new hotel is expected to support 50 full-time and part-time jobs, while 980 jobs are expected to be created during the construction period.

Hammerson UK development and project management director Robin Dobson said: “Hammerson has a successful track record of creating vibrant continually evolving places in and around thriving European Cities, and we are delighted to continue this journey with a prestigious hotel, restaurant and bar for this iconic destination.

“This is an important next step in our City Quarters concept, which will see us develop the area into a thriving cultural quarter adjacent to Victoria Leeds.

“It is hugely encouraging to have received such strong support for the proposals, and I would like to thank the local community for sharing their thoughts with us ahead of submission.”
