Brookfield Properties and Park Tower Group have broken ground on two new towers at Greenpoint Landing development in Brooklyn, a borough in New York, US.

The Greenpoint Landing master-planned development includes four residential components comprising a total of 11 residential towers, and 5,500 housing units.

Designed by Dutch company Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), the two towers, together with the adjacent seven-storey building, will bring 745 units.

The next phase of development at Greenpoint Landing also includes one acre of additional public waterfront open space designed by landscape architect James Corner Field Operations.

In addition to creating a total of 2.5 acres of continuous public open space along the shoreline, the two towers will add 8,600ft² of ground-floor retail.

Brookfield Property Partners multifamily development senior vice president Maria Masi said: "Together with Park Tower Group, we are revitalizing an underutilized and neglected waterfront into a thriving section of the neighborhood through much-needed housing and public greenspace along Greenpoint's breathtaking shoreline.”

The facades of the towers feature precast concrete panels, which are carved by a series of angled planes, surrounding large windows. The carved faces are designed to react dynamically to the movement of the sun.

Park Tower Group president Marian Klein said: "This groundbreaking represents a major step forward towards realizing our vision for Greenpoint Landing.

“Between our new developments with Brookfield and extending our esplanade with world-class landscape design by James Corner Field Operations, Greenpoint Landing will provide the community with significant waterfront access and redefine the Brooklyn skyline.”

The new towers were designed by OMA partner-in-charge Jason Long, along with project architects Yusef Ali Dennis and Christine Yoon, in collaboration with executive architect Beyer Blinder Belle, interior design/building landscape architect Marmol Radziner.

Long said: "We're excited to begin construction on what will be a new hinge point between Greenpoint and the waterfront.

“The two towers are flanked by smaller buildings - 7 stories at the corner and 3 stories at the water - to create a continuous yet shifting perimeter around the block. This variegated edge will extend Dupont and Eagle streets to bring activity and access to the East River.”
