British construction company Graham has secured a £113m contract to deliver a 1,400-bed student accommodation project for the University of York as part of a ‘Campus Masterplan’.

Graham has been selected as the main contractor for the first phase residential expansion of the Heslington East Campus.

Additional 800-bed units will be created under Phase two of the project.

Graham is also an investor as part of a consortium with Equitix, a fund manager of core infrastructure assets.

The initial development will begin in January 2019 and the completion is expected to take two years.

Group executive chairman Michael Graham said: “This is another fantastic win for Graham and builds on our strong pipeline of projects in the region following the opening of our Leeds office in 2017.

“We are committed to providing outstanding student accommodation and the 1,400 units delivered across the first phase of this project will bring our total output in the sector to more than 10,000 in the past five years.

“We look forward to developing this fantastic scheme and the positive impact it will have on the local community, creating opportunities for work and engagement with local businesses as we construct a high-class development that reflects York’s strong heritage.”

Graham, in partnership with architects Sheppard Robson, developed the design that will connect with the city’s unique heritage.

The project will utilise a modern offsite manufacturing facility located in the North of England, which will support the local economy in line with the company’s commitment to high-quality sustainable development.

Earlier in March 2018, Oundle School in Northamptonshire had appointed Graham Construction to deliver a £24m sports centre project.

The new sports centre, designed by Saunders Boston Architects with landscaping by PRP, will accommodate a 50-metre swimming pool, an eight-court sports hall, a fitness suite with up to 70 stations, a dedicated dance studio and three further multipurpose studios.

The centre is part of a wider Sports MasterPlan which includes a new athletics track, eight additional tennis courts, two new AstroTurf pitches and six additional netball courts.

Construction is due to be completed in the academic year 2019-20.
