Brick producer Forterra has secured planning consent for a £95m investment project to double production capacity at its Desford plant in Leicestershire, UK.

The approval, which is subject to conditions and a legal agreement, from the Leicestershire County Council allows the firm to build a new facility alongside the current factory.

The new facility will make Desford plant as the largest and most efficient brick factory in Europe. The facility will maintain production until the changeover scheduled in 2022.

As a result of the investment, the production capacity at the facility will increase from current 85 million bricks per year to 180 million enough to build 24,000 average-sized family homes.

Forterra said: "This twofold increase in output will be achieved via the construction of a new, modern facility with state-of-the-art automated processes that will minimise the plant’s environmental impact."

In the next three years, the project is expected to increase the company-wide brick production capacity by 16%, the firm noted.

Forterra chief executive Stephen Harrison said: “As one of Britain’s biggest manufacturers of building products, we endeavour to set the benchmark in terms of manufacturing efficiency, output and sustainability.

“In keeping with our strategic focus on manufacturing excellence, our new facility’s modern manufacturing methods will allow us to respond to our customers’ increasing demand for products as the rate of housebuilding continues to accelerate nationwide.

“We have every confidence that this project marks a sound, long-term investment in the future of both Forterra and UK housebuilding.”

Located about 3.2km from the M1, the modernised Desford site will offer a range of red and buff bricks to meet the demands of housebuilders.

Forterra is engaged in manufacturing building products in the UK. Employing approximately 1,800 people, the firm create bricks, blocks, precast concrete, paving and many other vital products. It operates a network of 18 manufacturing sites.
