A consortium of Boskalis subsidiary VBMS and NKT Cables has won a contract to connect two offshore wind farms to TenneT’s onshore grid in the Netherlands.

The Borssele Alpha contract covers the installation of two export cables to connect the Borssele wind farms 1 and 2 to the onshore grid.

Boskalis' share of the contract value is about €70M, while NKT’s share is about €77M.

In addition, TenneT separately awarded the option of the installation of export cable systems for Borssele Beta, to connect Borssele 3 and 4 offshore wind farms to the Dutch onshore grid. The option is subject to financial close.

Located in the North Sea, Borssele 1 and 2 wind farms will be connected to the grid by TenneT’s Borssele Alpha connection system. The combined 700MW grid connection system is expected to operate from 2019.

The scope of work will involve supply and installation of two 61km-long export cables, which will be routed through the Western Skeldt estuary and will come ashore near the existing high-voltage substation at Borssele.
