EDF-led consortium to build 600MW Dunkirk offshore wind project

A consortium led by French state-owned utility EDF has been selected by the French government to build the 600MW offshore wind project off the coast of Dunkirk.

The consortium, which also includes Germany’s Innogy and Canada’s Enbridge, will be responsible for designing, building, operating and maintaining the future Dunkirk offshore wind farm.

Planned to be built more than 10km off the coast of Dunkirk, the wind project will generate green power equivalent of around 40% of the Nord département’s electricity needs.

The project is central to the development of Dunkirk’s economy, and particularly its manufacturing, marine and tourism sectors, EDF claims.

EDF Group chairman and CEO Jean-Bernard Lévy said: “We welcome this decision by the Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition, which confirms the quality of the work done by EDF and its partners.

"With the awarding of the Dunkirk project EDF is one of the leaders in offshore wind power in Europe. It shows our strong regional roots and marks the consolidation of a genuine French offshore wind industry.

"Our winning bid was highly competitive, and this has notably prompted the Government to double the offshore wind power targets contained in its Multi-year Energy Plan, giving new development opportunities for EDF and all participants in the sector”.

The contract for the construction of Dunkirk wind project was awarded part of the third round of tenders launched by France for the development of offshore wind farms. The project is scheduled to be commissioned in 2026.

Commenting on the contract award, WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson said: “Things are starting to look more positive for wind energy in France again with the results from the Dunkirk offshore auction and the latest onshore tender.

"The Dunkirk results are excellent news for offshore wind in France and are further proof that offshore wind is a competitive and mature energy source."

In June 2019, EDF was authorised by the France’s Conseil d’Etat to operate the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm.
