The Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission has awarded a $755M contract to Dragados Team joint venture for the construction of a new parallel tunnel at the Thimble Shoal Channel.

The new tunnel will be around one mile in length, and will have an outer diameter of 42ft. Construction work is set to commence in late 2017, with the renovation of the Island 1 fishing pier.

Once completed, the new tunnel will carry two lanes of southbound traffic, with the existing tunnel carrying two lanes northbound.

The tunnel will be part of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel link, which combines bridges and four artificial islands, as well as a mile of tunnel, to connect Northampton County with Virginia Beach.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission chairman Frederick Stant said:  “This has been a well-managed project with a thoroughly competitive procurement. We look forward to working with the Dragados Team for the successful construction of this critical infrastructure.”

The project is expected to take approximately five years to be completed.
