Australian integrated services company Downer Group has won an A$80m (£45m) Balance of Plant contract for the 244MW Bango Wind Farm project to be located in New South Wales, Australia.

Under the terms of the contract, Downer will deliver road upgrades, internal access tracks, cabling, turbine foundations and other site facilities for the wind farm.

Bango wind farm is owned by Grassroots Renewable Energy, a partnership between CWP Renewables Australia and Partners Group. The wind farm, to be located 30km north of Yass, New South Wales, is expected to include up to 46 turbines and associated infrastructure.

GE and TransGrid are the project partners, which will supply GE Cypress 5.3MW turbines and substation, respectively, for the wind farm.

The Bango wind farm would generate enough clean energy to power 100,000 Australian homes, while saving more than 600,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

Bango wind farm is expected to be completed by 2021 and will be operational for 25 years from the date of commissioning, offering 10 full-time jobs and numerous supply and service opportunities throughout the project lifetime.

Downer renewables and power systems executive general manager Lena Parker said: “We look forward to working with CWP, Partners Group and GE to deliver the Bango Wind Farm and contribute to the local region.”

The wind farm will be located at a site with reliable wind resources, low density of residential dwellings and proximity to existing transmission infrastructure.

In additional to environmental benefits, the wind farm is expected to contribute to the Yass’ economy.

In July 2019, Downer Group completed work on the 128MW Numurkah solar farm (Numurkah), located about 220km north of Melbourne.

Owned and operated by Neoen, the solar farm was inaugurated by Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio.

Spread across 515 hectares, with 373,839 solar panels, the solar plant is expected to generate 255GWh of carbon-free, clean energy annually, to power the Melbourne tram network, Laverton Steelworks and over 48,000 Victorian households.
