Dominion, MWAA to develop 100MW solar project at Dulles Airport

US-based Dominion Energy and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) have announced a joint project to develop a 100MW solar power project on 1,200 acres at Washington Dulles International Airport.

Recently, Dominion Energy signed a sublease with the Airports Authority to commence feasibility studies on the project.

The project is expected to power 25,000 homes at peak output and be one of the largest solar facilities to provide clean energy in Northern Virginia.

Dominion Energy vice president of business development and merchant operations Keith Windle said: “More than 24 million passengers flying through Dulles each year will witness the sun’s energy being used to generate clean energy for Virginians.”

Dulles International Airport manager Mike Stewart said: “Partnering with Dominion Energy on this important project will give us the data and tools we need to determine the role that solar energy can play at a major international airport now and in the future.

“This project fits well with the Airports Authority’s goal of enhancing the sustainability and environmental performance of our facilities.”

Dominion Energy has a transmission line at Dulles International Airport property and the electricity generated from the solar project would connect to the line to deliver clean energy for residential and commercial customers.

In September 2019, the firm filed an application with PJM, the regional transmission organisation which coordinates the electrical grid in all or parts of 13 states and the District of Columbia, for interconnection of the project to the transmission grid.

Dominion Energy said that the project would be operational by 2023 support the company’s solar capital investment plan.

The company expects the project to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 55%.

In August 2018, Dominion Energy filed an application with Virginia’s State Corporation Commission (SCC) seeking approval to build two 6MW turbines and grid infrastructure needed to connect Virginia’s first, $300m offshore wind power project to the coast.
