Cubic, a provider of diversified systems and services to the transportation and defence markets, in partnership with Cisterra Development has started construction on its new $100m headquarters in San Diego, California.

The project will include the construction of two125,000ft2, three-story office buildings to consolidate the company’s two main San Diego campuses onto one existing site.

One of the buildings will serve as the corporate headquarters, while the other will be the headquarters for Cubic Transportation Systems.

The new headquarters will bring together the San Diego-based workforce of Cubic onto one centralised location at 9333 Balboa Ave in Kearny Mesa.

To be completed under a synthetic lease structure, the project will involve the modernisation of the new campus to accommodate growth and make facility improvements.

Cubic Corporation chairman, president and chief executive officer Bradley Feldmann said: “Cubic has been headquartered in San Diego for six decades and we remain very proud of our heritage.

“Our culture is driven by innovation and a philosophy we refer to as One Cubic, which emphasizes collaboration across our businesses to share ideas, strategies and expertise. We are thrilled our new campus will bring together our San Diego employees onto one centralized location where we can continue to achieve excellence through teamwork.”

As part of the Cubic’s efforts to promote sustainability, the new facility will feature energy-efficient equipment, solar power and electric vehicle charging stations.

The campus will also incorporate new amenity areas including a basketball court and an open lawn, as well as a new café and a fitness centre.

The redevelopment project is expected to be completed in December 2020.

The development process for the project started in 2018, with the issuance of a request for proposals (RfP) to select the provider of development services.

In the RfP launched by Jones Lang LaSalle, on behalf of Cubic, Cisterra was chosen along with team members Ware Malcomb as the architect and Whiting-Turner as the general contractor.
