CPB Contractors wins design-build contract for New Zealand road project

CPB Contractors, a CIMIC Group company, has been awarded a contract to deliver the second and final phase of the NZ Transport Agency project, the State Highway 2 Baypark to Bayfair Link Upgrade in Tauranga.

The design-build contract will generate revenue to CPB Contractors of about NZD82m.

It will include the construction of two fly-overs; the first directing State Highway 29 A traffic over the East Coast railway line and Te Maunga intersection, and the other directing State Highway 2 traffic up and over the Maunganui-Girven roundabout.

Furthermore, the work will include refurbishment of the existing Maunganui-Girven intersection, replacement of the Te Maunga roundabout with an elevated interchange, and improvement of walking and cycling connections between Baypark and Bayfair.

The project is being delivered by the NZ Transport Agency on behalf of the government of New Zealand.

Construction on the project is set to begin in May 2017 with the upgrade expected to open to traffic in 2020.

CIMIC CEO Adolfo Valderas said: “Our track record of delivering major road initiatives puts CIMIC Group and CPB Contractors in a strong position to deliver the upgrade of Tauranga’s eastern corridor.

“We are pleased to contribute our world class expertise and local experience in New Zealand to this project, which will support economic growth in the region by improving the route to the Port of Tauranga, and create a safer and more sustainable roads system.”

CPB Contractors managing director Román Garrido said: “Our team is focused on delivering an efficient and effective works program and using proven traffic management and innovative construction methodologies to minimise disruption and maximise safety for road users.

“Our approach to project management and procurement is centred on certainty of delivery, quality and value for money, as well as in creased opportunities for local workers and businesses and socially-ethical partnering arrangements.”
