Bravida, a Swedish multi-technical service provider for buildings and plants in the Nordics, has chosen Danish consulting group COWI to plan the installations in Karlatornet, a 245-metre tower in Gothenburg, Sweden.

With 73 floors, the tower will be the tallest building in the Nordic region.

Work on Karlatornet is expected to begin at the end of 2018 or early in 2019, marking the first step in the development of the new Gothenburg district of Karlastaden.

At the peak of construction, the tower will grow by around one floor a week.

The skyscraper will comprise nearly 590 flats and a 350-room hotel. The residents will have access to a gym, pool and several shared facilities.

A large hotel with a restaurant and bar will be established in the lower levels of Karlatornet.

Karlatornet will offer a clear view of Vinga, Marstrand, the Pater Noster lighthouse, and city landmarks such as Älvsborg bridge, Skansen Kronan, the Liseberg theme park, Kämpe bridge and Keiller Park.

COWI was part of the team that won the architecture competition for Karlastaden in 2014. Since then, the company has been providing various technical services at different stages of Sweden’s urban development project.

COWI senior market director Henrik Malmberg said: “Now we are very happy to be involved in the actual implementation. It demonstrates our ability to gather the right skills and experience and to work closely with our customer Bravida.”

Bravida and COWI, in partnership with contractor Serneke, are responsible for project design, estimation and planning of all installations in the tower. COWI will handle the electrical and HVAC systems.

COWI senior vice-president, buildings, Håkan Adelwald, said: “This project is in line with our ambition to increase the number of large and complex projects which offer great opportunities to enhance our attractiveness and positioning in the marketplace going forward.”

US architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed Karlatornet, which is scheduled for completion in 2021.
