Costain wins highways contracts worth £150m in UK

British technology-based construction and engineering solutions provider Costain has won new highways contracts across the UK worth more than £150m.

The company secured the contracts in the last quarter and the projects involve services ranging from consultancy and digital technology solutions to programme management and complex project delivery.

Costain won a major contract from Lancashire County Council. Under this contract, the company will be responsible for the delivery of the Preston Western Distributor Road Project, including a new East West Link Road and the new Cottam Link Road.

Under the contract, Costain will support the council to improve the capacity and connectivity across the road network in the region, and improve pedestrian and cycle route access to improve connections to residential areas.

Costain CEO Alex Vaughan said: “We’re at the forefront of this exciting sector, helping our clients shape the UK transportation landscape.

“An increasing number of companies are looking for consultancy and digital technology expertise, alongside complex programme capabilities, in the delivery of vital projects to support our highways network.

“Through our integrated service mix we can provide a full value proposition, to deliver much-needed capacity and resilience enhancements across the UK’s road network.”

The company was appointed to the scheme after a collaboration with Lancashire County Council during early contractor involvement to advance the scheme through planning, design development and the budget development phases.

Construction on the project began in October 2019 and is expected to be completed in 2023.

The company has also secured a contract from Highways England for the installation of highways technology in three areas in the South East.

The technology will help manage traffic on the trunk road and motorway network, facilitating Highways England to improve safety, reduce congestion and provide a better experience for the customer.

Costain has commenced construction on the $266m Preston Western Distributor scheme and a new junction on the M55 in Preston, UK.

The road project, which will link Preston city and southern Fylde to the M55 motorway, is expected to benefit areas of the city, such as Fulwood, Ingol, Cottam, Lea and Ashton, and the wider area, including the Enterprise Zone at Warton.
