Costain to deliver A19 upgrade project in UK

British smart infrastructure solutions company Costain has been appointed by Highways England to deliver major upgrades on the A19 as part of the government company’s Regional Investment Programme (RIP).

The construction company has been working with Highways England and other stakeholders to develop the design and delivery strategy for the £125m upgrade project.

Upgrades at Testo’s roundabout, a major junction linking the north-south A19 corridor with the eastern route around the Tyneside conurbation, is expected to ease severe congestion and reduce journey times.

With Secretary of State for Transport granting development consent for the project in September 2018, construction is expected to commence shortly.

Costain, in partnership with Highways England, is also developing a scheme to improve the adjacent junction at Downhill Lane and this construction will be integrated into the upgrades at Testo.

Costain has been appointed for the A19 scheme following a six-year RIP framework contract from Highways England as delivery integration partner in the north region and in the east region, announced in November 2018.

Even though the upgrades to the A19 are not part of the framework, they indicate major highway schemes planned in the north east under the RIP.

Costain expects its vast expertise in the management of complex project delivery and focus on technology and innovation to support major objectives mentioned by Highways England in its Strategic Business Plan for 2015-2020 to improve safety, increase capacity and user experience across its network.

Costain CEO Andrew Wyllie said: “I am delighted that we are at the forefront of helping Highways England deliver its ambitious Regional Investment Programme, which will significantly enhance network capacity, improving the lives of local people and supporting broad-based economic growth.”

Costain provides smart infrastructure solutions across the UK’s energy, water and transportation infrastructure.

It offers a range of services across the life cycle of client assets by integrating complex delivery, consultancy, technology and asset optimisation services.
