Costain begins construction on $266m road project in Preston, UK

UK-based construction and engineering solutions provider Costain has commenced construction on the £207m ($266m) Preston Western Distributor scheme and a new junction on the M55 in Preston, UK.

The new road scheme will link Preston city and southern Fylde to the M55 motorway.

Preston Western Distributor scheme will be constructed on the west side of Preston from the M55 motorway to a new junction with Blackpool Road at Lea.

Slated to open in 2023, the new road scheme is expected to benefit areas of the city, such as Fulwood, Ingol, Cottam, Lea and Ashton, and the wider area, including the Enterprise Zone at Warton.

Upon completion, the new road is expected to increase the capacity, reduce congestion and ease traffic flow on the road network, and facilitate new housing and business development in the area.

Lancashire County Council leader and County Councillor Geoff Driver said: “This ambitious £207m scheme will transform the way people in the area live, travel and work.

“It will particularly benefit people who live or work around the city, as well as further afield, by helping them to get between the motorway network and the city more easily.

“We’re proud to say that this is yet another major road project which the county council has made happen in recent years, on behalf of the City Deal partnership.”

The Preston Western Distributor scheme will link the A583 and the M55 motorway and will involve the construction of a new motorway junction, four new bridges and two viaducts.

The new road scheme is the biggest road programme in the City Deal – an agreement between the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership, Preston City Council, South Ribble Borough Council and Lancashire County Council, the central government and Homes England.

The City Deal is expected to provide new infrastructure, more than 17,000 new homes, new school places, open green spaces, new health provision and create 20,000 new jobs in the private sector.
