Construction work is set to commence on a new $250m office building for HSBC in Downtown Dubai, UAE.

The new 20-storey building has been designed by Broadway Malyan, and is collaboration between the firm’s Abu Dhabi and Lisbon studios. GRDI is the developer of the project.

The building will cover an area of 30,000 sq m, comprising 16 floors of office space over a four-level car park.

Work is expected to be completed in 2017, with the bank expected to occupy the property in 2018.

The project forms part of a property consolidation scheme by HSBC in Dubai that will shrink its portfolio from four to two buildings, as well as increase its floor space to 37,000 sq m from about 33,000 sq m.

Broadway Malyan Lisbon-based director David Whitehead said: “As a financial institution it was important that the design had a rigour and honesty and its glass construction represents a visual openness and transparency while the expressed structure anchors the building to the ground emphasize the sense of stability.

“HSBC is a truly global company and we wanted the design to symbolise connectivity by introducing a vertical fritting pattern on the exterior of the building which represents metaphorical communication lines extending outwards from a central core.”
